Open All Hours – The Art of the Deal (and the Delivery!)

Capers, Curmudgeons, and Corner Shops

If you’ve ever tried to buy a slightly bruised apple or a tin of biscuits with a suspicious dent, you’ll know that shopping at Arkwright’s is less of a transaction and more of a tactical battle. The heart of Open All Hours has always been the hilarious, fast-paced “capers” between the master of the shop and his long-suffering apprentice. Watching Adrian Miles-Roberts and Chris Smalley bring this double act to life has been one of the highlights of our rehearsal period!

The Master and the Errand Boy
Whether Arkwright is trying to persuade Granville that a bike with one pedal is “aerodynamic” or they are both attempting to wrestle a particularly aggressive burglar out of the shop, the chemistry between these two is electric. Adrian captures that wonderful, penny-pinching craftiness of Arkwright, while Chris brings the perfect amount of weary resignation to Granville.

Their “capers” often involve a lot of physical comedy—and a fair amount of dodging that infamous snapping till! It’s a classic British comedy duo brought to life right here in Southport, and their back-and-forth banter is guaranteed to have you in stitches.

It’s been such a joy watching these two spar during rehearsals, and we can’t wait for you to see the sparks fly on stage. Whether they’re out-smarting a customer or just out-smarting each other, it’s a double act you won’t want to miss. We’ll see you at the counter!
