Play Selection and Casting

Each month the play selection team get together to review what plays we should consider for next season. They always try to strike a balance of plays that will suit everyone, however, this is not as easy as it seems.

The Play Selection and Casting Committee (PSCC) are responsible for choosing the plays that the SDC perform, arranging licences and putting together a directorial team for each show. We try to find a balance for each season, and try to come up with a mix of well-known plays plus one or two others you might not have heard of.

We aim to provide a mix of the modern and the more established – comedies, dramas and thrillers – both for production on the main stage and in the SDC bar.

Having found our director for each production, we’ll arrange a read through of each play and a talk-up session, where the director can discuss his or her vision for the production before we hold open auditions. See our Play casting and auditions page for further information and diary dates.

Anyone is free to audition, with the proviso that – if given a part – they become members of the SDC at the beginning of rehearsals. Rehearsals are usually intense over a 12 week period leading up each show.

Currently we are looking at including a play with music in our 2024-25 season.
