Open All Hours – The Grocer and His Errand Boy

The Magic of the Corner Shop

There is something uniquely comforting about a British corner shop, isn’t there? It’s the heart of the neighbourhood, filled with the scent of fresh bread and the sound of a till that has a mind of its own. At the Little Theatre Southport, we’ve been working tirelessly to recreate that iconic atmosphere for our production of Open All Hours. From sourcing authentic 1970s props to building a set that feels like it’s been on that Doncaster corner for decades, our team has poured so much love into every detail. It’s a joy to bring this beloved sitcom back to life, and it all starts with the two men behind the counter.

Adrian Miles-Roberts as Arkwright Stepping into the formidable shoes of the legendary Ronnie Barker is no small feat, but Adrian Miles-Roberts has embraced the challenge with a cheeky grin and a lot of dedication. A veteran of the SDC for over 20 years, Adrian has appeared in everything from The Importance of Being Earnest to The Full Monty. To truly capture Arkwright’s essence, Adrian jokes that he took a “daring sabbatical” to the Himalayan mountains to study the art of the perfect stammer with Tibetan monks! Whether he’s battling the antiquated till or trying to save a penny, Adrian’s performance is a masterclass in perfectly timed pauses.

Chris Smalley as Granville Every miserly grocer needs a long-suffering errand boy, and Chris Smalley is the perfect fit for the put-upon Granville. Since joining the SDC in 2019, Chris has become a familiar and much-loved face on our stage. He has found the rehearsal process for Open All Hours to be an absolute blast, fuelled by the talent and enthusiasm of a cast that feels more like a family. Chris brings a wonderful energy to Granville’s dreams of a life beyond the shop floor, and we can’t wait for you to see him in action.

We can’t wait to see you in the audience. As Arkwright would say… “G-g-g-get your tickets!”.
