Forget the Classroom: The SDC Youth Are Taking Over Southport This March!

There is a unique kind of magic that happens when a cast pours their entire heart and soul into a production. If you’ve walked past the Little Theatre Southport recently, you might have heard the echoes of laughter, the focused energy of rehearsals, and the unmistakable buzz of a show coming to life. This March, the Southport Dramatic Club Youth Theatre is ready to channel that energy into a truly fantastic production of Willy Russell’s beloved play, Our Day Out.

A Timeless Journey

Originally written for television and later adapted for the stage, Our Day Out remains one of Willy Russell’s most poignant and hilarious works. It follows the “Progress Class” – a group of inner-city schoolchildren from Liverpool – as they leave the confines of the classroom for a celebratory coach trip to Conwy Castle in Wales.

What follows is much more than just a school outing. Through the lens of the compassionate Mrs Kay and the strict, traditionalist Mr Briggs, we witness a day of chaos, discovery, and unexpected vulnerability. It is a story that masterfully balances sharp-witted comedy with a moving look at the realities and aspirations of working-class youth.

Local Talent, Big Ambition

The SDC Youth Theatre has a long-standing reputation for excellence, but this production feels particularly special. Our young performers have been working tirelessly, delving into these complex characters to bring authenticity and passion to the stage. From the boisterous energy of the students to the clashing philosophies of their teachers, the cast is capturing the very essence of Russell’s writing: the bittersweet realisation of life’s complexities mixed with the enduring power of human connection.

Whether it’s the street-smart survival instincts of the kids or the fleeting moments of freedom they find away from the city, our local stars are bringing a fresh, vibrant perspective to this 1980s classic.

Why You Can’t Miss It

Our Day Out is a play that promises to make you laugh out loud one moment and leave you with a lump in your throat the next. It’s a celebration of youth, a reflection on education, and above all, a showcase of the incredible talent we have right here in Southport.

Supporting our Youth Theatre means supporting the next generation of performers, technicians, and creatives. Given the dedication shown in every single rehearsal, this is guaranteed to be a production that stays with you long after the final curtain call.
